The four of us walked around the corner to discover -- Ducks! We went in and bought our tickets and caught the next duck tour. We've been on duck tours in other places -- the Wisconsin Dells and Branson -- so this was pretty much the same thing just different sights. We saw a lot of the downtown area and gave us a good idea of things we might like to see later. We also went for a "swim" on the Charles River. We were freezing by the time we reached land again.
As we were waiting for the duck tour to start we started talking with one of the duck personnel and he had told us how best to get to Fenway from there -- walk. So after the tour, we stopped in at a Walgreens and picked up a few plastic rain ponchos as the skies were looking like they might open up that afternoon. It turned out directions weren't really necessary since you just sort of fell into the stream of people walking and they all were going to Fenway. When we reached our destination and were going in the gates, a funny thing happened. It seems that the tickets I had ordered for TUESDAY came as tickets for WEDNESDAY. Since we kind of had plans for Wednesday already, Mike went and checked with a couple of scalpers outside the park and we ended up trading our tickets for Wednesday's game for that day's game. The tickets we got were not together so Micah and I took the tickets that were nearer to our original tickets. Mike and Reed got the tickets that were right behind the camera dugout by first base. About the 5th inning, Mike texted me to ask how we were doing. I answered, "Micah's knees are up to his chin, but otherwise ok." Mike texted back for us to just come down there, there were empty seats around him. Soooo, off we went to enjoy the rest of the game with great seats. The Sox even won the game 3-1 for us. They lost the other two games to the Rays that week so I'm glad we saw THAT game!
Once we returned to the hotel -- victorious, both in the winning of the baseball game AND in navigating back to the hotel, we contacted my niece, Rachel, and made plans to meet at the Cheers restaurant by the Government Center (there are 2 Cheers restaurants in Boston, one whose outside was used on the TV show and the other that is a replica of the inside of the show -- we ate at the latter). Once again, we made it with the trusty navigation system, but once it gets you to your location it kind of forgets that you need to find a place to park -- that's the tricky part. Rachel walked the entire 3 miles from her condo in Cambridge to the restaurant. We had a nice meal and a nice visit with Rachel. She is hoping to find a job in the Midwest, preferrably in the Cedar Rapids area and move back. If anyone knows of a job opening for a pharmacist (she is a nuclear pharmacist and would like to continue that if possible) let me know! We gave her a ride back to her condo because we couldn't let our little girl walk 3 miles in the dark. Cambridge is kind of a weird area -- it is near MIT and Harvard so there are a lot of college kids and yuppies. We could not believe how small her condo is. She said the upstairs neighbor has one the same size but a little different layout and he is asking $285,000 for it and actually has someone interested. The fact that he has someone interested gives her hope that she will be able to sell when the time comes. I hope she is able to relocate soon!
While we were out and about on this first day in Boston, we noticed a couple of things. The women in that area have EXTREMELY long legs. As a short-legged Norwegian, I find that quite unfair. The other thing we noticed is that everywhere you turn there is a Dunkin' Donuts. I think they are right up there with Starbucks and McDonalds out there!
